Crush Your 2020 Goals in 4 Simple Steps

People with goals succeed because they know where they’re going.

Earl Nightingale

Goals and the goal setting process can often be complex and confusing.

There’s a way you can beat this.

Crush Your Goals is a 4 step process that simplifies goal setting to help you set and achieve any goal.

Step 1 – DREAM

Dream is the first goal step

Whatever you dream about you can become.

A. L Williams

Start by taking some quiet time to dream, away from all the noise and buzz. This first step is the key. Our dreams become our goals so let’s take time to sit quietly and dream first.

Next, ask yourself, “What ONE dream gives me a sense of achievement and success – and gets me really excited?” More income? Landing a big client? Finding a new job? A new home? Taking a vacation? You get the idea.

Now, create a mental picture of your dream. Allow yourself to feel the satisfaction and happiness you get from achieving your dream.

This clear mental picture, your visualization, combined with your strong emotions and feelings, creates the focus for setting your goal.

So … do some dreaming for 2020.

Step 2 – SET

Set your goal to achieve it

There is no substitute for tried and true fundamentals of clear goal setting, systematic measurement against these goals, and rewards and recognition when goals are achieved.

Ken Blanchard

In the Step 1, you chose your dream for 2020.

Now, let’s turn your dream into a goal with Step 2, Set.

State it out loud. Be as specific as you can. For example, if your goal is more income, state exactly how much more: I will increase my annual income by X thousand dollars.

Time your goal. When will you achieve it? State the exact date: I will increase my annual income by X thousand dollars by X date, 2020.

Write your goal just as you’ve stated it. When you put your goal in writing, you make it more memorable by internalizing it.

View your goal. Post your goal where you’ll be sure to view it every day. Make it visible, and make time to look at it regularly and often.

Your dream has become a goal. You’re ready to take action to achieve it with Step 3.

Step 3 – ACT

Just do it! to act on your goals

Achieving goals is simple. Once you decide on what you want, put on the blinders and move full speed ahead. Don’t listen to anyone else because they will only tell you why something can’t be done.

You’ve set your goal for 2020 in Step 2. You’re displaying it visibly and viewing it often every day.

Viewing your goal is a great start. Now it’s time for action. Without action, your goal is just a wish.

Think less, act more to achieve your goals.

This step drives goal achievement. And it’s the step that can be the most challenging. It’s always easier to think and plan than it is to act.

These 3 tips will help you act on your goal …

Take action. Nike has this right: Just do it! Do what? Do whatever action or actions help you achieve your goal. For example, if your goal is to find a new job, updating your resume and starting an active search of job boards are 2 positive actions. If your goal is to improve your putting, getting to the putting green X times a week is a positive action.

Check action. You’ll want to check your actions to make sure they’re on track toward your goal. How will you know? Ask yourself this question, Will this action move me closer to my goal? If the answer is no, stop. Shift to one that does. Putting this question in writing and making it as visible as your goal will keep your actions on track and focused.

Keep on acting and checking. Taking the right actions consistently and repeating them again and again will achieve your goal… it really is that simple.

The Dream, Set and Act steps are ready to go. Time to tie all this together with Step 4 and offer some final thoughts.

Step 4 – TRACK

Trach your goals visibly to achieve them

Whatever you vividly imagine, ardently desire, sincerely believe and enthusiastically act upon … must come to pass.

Paul J. Meyer

You’ve let yourself dream, and turned your dream into a goal. You’re viewing that goal often and checking yourself consistently to ensure you’re acting on it.

Tracking your goal is the final step. It shows you how you’re doing and helps guarantee you’ll achieve your goal.

You can track your progress with a simple handwritten form, Word table, Excel spreadsheet or an app.

Use whatever works best for you. Be sure it’s visible and includes …

Record and track your goals to achieve them.
  • your goal
  • when you’ll achieve it
  • the actions you plan to take to achieve it
  • a completion date for each action
  • a check off each action as it’s completed.

When you check your visible tracker regularly, you’ll quickly see how you’re doing … and if you’re taking the right actions to achieve your goal.

One More Thing …

Even with the best planning, our goals can sometimes go off track. Life gets in the way; other demands pull us in different directions; people disrupt our plans; emails, texts and phone calls keep coming.

We get distracted from going after our goal with the result we don’t achieve it.

Focus to achieve your goals

So what’s the solution?

Focus is the solution.

Work on keeping your goal clearly visible, checking the “why” of every action, and staying with that action despite disruptions and distractions. Focus takes a lot of patience, effort and practice, but it always works.

You now have a complete goal setting process you can use to achieve any goal … and get the results you’re looking for in 2020!
